Can Antibiotics Be Taken To Cure The Infected Tooth Extraction Site?

I had a tooth extracted on Monday. I was prescribed Amoxicillin and Vicodin. I accidentally mixed up the bottles and have been taken the pain medication instead of the antibiotic since Tuesday. Now the extraction site looks infected. Should I just commence the antibiotic or keep an eye on it or should I contact a dentist immediately?

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

Aa per your complain Amoxicillin or any other antibiotic is given post extraction to avoid infection at the extraction socket..
But it does not always get infected even without post extraction antibiotics..

In case if the extraction socket is appearing painful and infected it can be due to causes like infection at the extraction site, unhealed socket also known as dry socket etc..

For ruling out consult an Oral Physician and get evaluated..

But as of now you can continue taking antibiotic Amoxicillin for preventing further infection if it is present...

Hope this helps..

Regards..

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern.

As per your query you have got tooth extracted and you feel like signs of infection there, need not to worry. If there is white spot on extraction site it shows mild irritation and if there is formation of yellow clot which is entirely normal and you can see is a naked bone which is sign of rapid healing. Don't dislodge the clot with tongue as it will cause formation of dry socket then and leads to infection. You should use antimicrobial mouth wash to prevent from antimicrobial agents. Keep following instructions given by dentist. Do warm saline gargles three times a day. Don't blow out and split repeatedly as it will cause dislodgement of clot. In case if you experience any type of pain or foul smell near socket visit dentist immediately and get IOPA(X-ray) done to check level of healing and bone formation. Keep drinking cold water.

Hope your concern has been resolved.

Best Wishes,
Dr. Harry Maheshwari
