Can Alcohol Or Wine Consumption Cause Increased Heart Beats?

Woke up (this happens often after several glasses of red wine...or alcohol in general) with my heart POUNDING hard...and hard time catching my breath... probably just going to quit drinking all together. Was a little frightening last night. 53 years old. 155lbs. Good health. Started running marathons in 2008. Do one or two each year.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Yes, excessive alcohol may damage the heart. It can cause cardiac arrhythmia like atrial fibrillation after the binge drinking, which can cause chest pain, shortness of breath, dizziness or syncope. You should one ECG done. And should gradually decrease the alcohol consumption.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
