Can Alcohol Abuse Lead To Dysregulated Speech?

I am at my wits end. My son is an alcoholic, no doubt. Has detoxified a couple of times. He is an adult male almost 50. When he is drinking, my first notice is his speech, he stutters, isolates himself and most important wants to sleep away the day and night, no food intake, and begins yelling out loud. (no specific words, or names, most of the times it s like every half a minute sometimes louder than other shouts, but very noticeable. Sometimes short yells, and other times long ones. I swear I can t believe my neighbors haven t heard him outside and said something to me. He smokes and will go outside at 2-3am to have a cigarette as he isn t allowed to smoke indoors, but at these times, he isn t sleeping. Almost always it is when he is asleep. He doesn t believe me that he is so loud or even that he is shouting. In the winter, the house is closed up so it can go unnoticed outside the house, but in spring, summer when the house is more open, or even when I m on the phone, people will look around or ask me what s that??? I just say he s driving me crazy and my husband who will soon be 82, has Myasthenia Gravis and Dementia becoming more than just in the moderate stage. Is there anything you can shed some light on as to what I can or should do to pinpoint why his reaction to overdrinking is causing this reaction. Anyone else I know who has had an alcoholic addiction has never exhibited this behavior. There have been members in both our families who ve been alcoholics but my son is the worst, from early day to night and really anytime he has a little money. He does not hold down a steady job. $20 bucks here and there go a long way doing odd jobs. Even if he gets a regular job, it doesn t last long because he misses work or worse yet shows up and gets told to go home. Believe it or not when he is truly sober, he is not the same person. I can t just kick him out of the house with no where to go. It s really getting me down. Please tell me what you think this is? The yelling is unimaginable. You wouldn t believe it until you really have heard him. It s like someone yelling down the street or from a backwoods area for HELP, but not in any word, just shouting.

Hello,

Prolonged alcohol use can affect your brain and thus cause dysregulated speech. If symptoms persist, better to consult a neurologist and plan for an MRI brain to rule out possible intracranial (inside the brain) causes.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Shinas Hussain, General & Family Physician
