Can A Child With Mildly Enlarged Left Ventricle And Reconfigured Heart Play Sports?

My son had Myocarditis as a baby, went into congestive heart failure. He is now 14, his cardiologist says his left ventricle is still mildly enlarged and his heart was reconfigured. He also found his tricuspid valve isint closing all the way, causing a heart murmur. The dr. cleared him to play sports. His heart fuction at this time is normal. My question is should I get a second opinion? Should he be aloud to play sports?

Pediatrician 's  Response
Hello,

In general, cardiologist are very conservative. Meaning they don't often clear children for sports unless they are pretty sure the heart is fully functioning. It sounds like your child has recovered.

Heart murmurs of little significance do not keep children out of sports. But you need to be assured, so if that requires a second opinion, you should get one.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr. Lisa Baker
