Can A Blood Test Be Able To Detect Why Fatigue And Feverish Feeling Are Occurring In A Patient?

My niece went for a routine check-up, and was referred to a Hematologist. Her CBC includes the following abnormal results: she s leukocytopenic (1.5), her Hgb (2.98) and HCT (8.8) are both low and she has thrombocytopenia (89), her RBC is also borderline low (2.98) ( however are normocytic and normochromic (MCV 89.9, MCHC 32.8). She s slightly fatigue, slightly feverish. There are no early cell lines (blasts or any precursors) on her differential. What could cause these results?

Hello,

What is the age of patient? Pancytopenia (means all 3 lines are reduced) has many causes right from fever to malignancy.

Even autoimmune hemolytic anemia or aplastic anemia will cause Pancytopenia. For initial assessment, peripheral smear examination is must.

Based on smear only we can come to some conclusion and few require bone marrow examination. Please consult the hematologist for further opinion and management.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Siddartha
