Can Xanax Cause Catatonia?

My sister, age 84 has been diagnosed wth Alzheimers disease. Her medication includes 0.25 mg Xanax, twice daily. This evening, after taking her second pill for the day, she lapsed into a catatonic state. Can this be cause by Xanax? How is this treated?

Based on your query, my opinion is as follows.
1. No, xanax won't cause catatonia.
2. Electroconvulsive therapy can be used to treat catatonia. Benzodiazepenes or antiepileptics can also be used to treat it.
3. Meet a neurologist for treatment. Medication interaction needs evaluation.
