Can Vitamin D Deficiency Induced Stomach Bloating, Periodontal And Dryness Be Treated?

Hi I am female, age 44 - hair loss is severe, serrum ferritin is very low and have been on dexorange 1 tablet for the last 6 months - not much improvement - serum ferritin is now 19. Vit D levels fell to 13 and went on a 12 week dosage - now it at 32 - stomach is bloated and teeth yellow - diagnosed with periodontal but now under control. But stomach is not ok and hence I think mouth is affected and so are the teeth. Lips are very very very dry.
Could you help ? thanks AG

Hello, my dear. I would be concerned if you were my patient that you have multiple nutritional deficiencies impacted on by poor intestinal tract absorption . Dry lips can indicate many things, but start with getting 1.5 liters - 2 liters of fresh noncaloric water per day. An essential fatty acid deficiency may also cause this. Hair loss - zinc and protein; compromised thyroid? Here is what I suggest as public health measures: serum ferritin indicates low iron and absorption is increased by taking in foods high in iron combined with fruit or other high vitamin C source. Vitamin D will need to be taken daily, it is not "cured". Bloated stomach indicated malnutrition or food intolerance, how is your weight? If low, you need more protein with the bloated stomach. If certain foods bother you, then food intolerance may be causing deficiencies. You could take a multivitamin - chewable if poor digestion and consult a dietitian for a more comprehensive work up. Please floss to slow down the recession of your gums. I am here if you need clarification. Ask for me Kathy Shattler, MS,RDN

Hello and Welcome to HCM,
Let me try to help you figure out your issues. You are losing hair which can be related to the low iron. It can also be related to hypothyroidism. I suggest you ask your doctor for a TSH, free T4 to rule out hypothyroidism relative to hair loss.

The dexorange is a good supplement and it is causing an upward trend in your serum ferritin. I have clients who cannot get above 9 even with infusions. You didn't mention your Hb level.

The bloating is probably not from vitamin D deficiency but something in your diet you are not tolerating

Use lip balm on your lips and drink 10 glasses of fluid per day to help the dry mouth and lips. These are also side-effects from medication.

You are making progress. Calm down. If things do not improve shortly, write us back with your progress including Hb and ferritin changes. Note any ongoing stomach or bowel symptoms including pain.

Good luck. Kathryn Shattler, MS,RDN
