Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have a problem with my son he is taking a drug called vicodin not prescribed for him he has cirrhosis of the liver and has aan alcohol addiction he just got hold of more vicodin after going through withdrawal for 3 days I am very scared I cant get him to go for help
Thanks for your question.Anyone with history of liver disease including cirrhosis should use pain medication Vicodine(Acetaminophen and Hydrocodone) wit extreme caution because Acetaminophen component is highly hepatotoxic(liver damaging) and that is vicodine comes with black box warning of potential liver failure and death.Vicodine should not be taken at high doses and more often than prescribed.Always be sure that you are not getting Acetaminophen from other sources like many over the counter(OTC) medications contain it.Always check drug labels as Acetaminophen is listed as "APAP".Always ask your doctor before taking any medicine even if you take OTC products.
