Can Tylenol Be Taken Instead Of Naproxen To Relieve Pain And Reduce Fever?

I am looking for a pain reliever, fever reducer. I have Chronic Kidney Disease Stage 3, high blood pressure and take 81mg of aspirin daily. I was using Naproxen, but, my primary care doctor said it is not good for the kidneys and suggested Tylenol. I would prefer to not take Tylenol if possible. I saw my kidney doctor yesterday and forgot to ask him about this. Thank you, Mike

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Dear Mike, Hi & Welcome.
Yes, Tylenol can be taken instead of Naproxen to relieve pain and reduce fever.
Tylenol (Acetaminophen) is broken down/metabolized almost completely by the liver and thus it does not affect kidney function the way that non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like Naproxen does.
Acetaminophen is safe on the kidneys and may damage your liver at high doses and be sure to avoid drinking alcohol while on this medicine. Hope this would be helpful.
