Can Trazodone Induce Sleep?

I was given Ativan and it worked the opposite way. Instead of relaxing me it caused me to be agitated--- now I have been prescribed Trazodone. Will it allow me to relax so I can sleep? Or is it likely to be like the Ativan. This is really my 85 yr old husband

Hi,

A separate drug can then be prescribed for insomnia—either a newer sleep medication instead of ativan or low-dose trazodone.

Studies have suggested that trazodone plus another antidepressant can improve sleep in these cases.

Alternatively, trazodone might be taken alone, at a higher, antidepressant dose, to treat both problems.

Trazodone is basically an antidepressant that increases serotonin activity in the brain and is used for depression, anxiety, sleep and pain. Trazodone is not considered to be habit forming but should be taken exactly as prescribed by the doctor. Trazodone is available as 50 mg or 100 mg tablets.

It's recommended with the trazodone dose for sleep that people take it at bedtime, and dosages include 50, 100, 150 and 300 mg tablets. The starting trazodone dose for sleep is anywhere from 25 to 50 mg. Consult your clinician.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. AJEET SINGH, General & Family Physician
