Can Trazadone Be Taken By An Elderly Lady For Sleeping Difficulty?

My 90 year old mother has Alzheimer s and at times has trouble sleeping at night. Last night she was up 4 times. Would it be safe for her to take a small dosage of trazadone to help her sleep? I plan on calling her doctor in the morning to find out about this medicine.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

As per my clinical experience, the Trazodone use is not safe at an age of 90 years in old mother; due to multiple possible side effects profile. It is better to discuss the need and role of safer molecules such as Melatonin or others with her primary care visit.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
