Can Toujeo And Humulin Be Used Together?

I am a type 2 diabetic, using Toujeo pen daily (basal insulin). My doctor has prescribed Humulin R to be used separately around meal times on a sliding scale to control mealtime glucose spikes. From the descriptions of the two insulins I see that they are two different formulations. Toujeo is largine-based; Humulin R is not. Are there any known problems with using these two insulins together?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Yes, it may be taken together but not in the same syringe. Toujeo (Insulin glargine) is recombinant human insulin which has an onset of insulin effect in 1 ½ to 2 hours that lasts 24 hours and hence given once daily.

Whereas Humulin R (Regular insulin) is a short-acting insulin which has an onset of action of 1/2 hour to 1 hour and duration of action of 6 to 8 hours and hence given three or more times daily before meals to cover insulin needs for meals eaten.

There is no problem of taking these insulins together, however, you cannot put them in the same syringe and take it in one dose as this may reduce the efficacy of each insulin.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali
