Can TMJ Cause Headaches?

Hello, I m 48 years old and have been getting these headaches.. The pain starts in the back of the left side of my neck, in the hollow area behind the ear and runs up my jaw to face and finally to the eye. Its very sore if I rub a small spot right above eye but below eyebrow. I do have TMJ, could this be the cause ?

Hi,

I don't think in your case that TMJ dysfunction is likely causing your discomfort, just based on the location you are describing. I suspect you may have a degree of what is called sub-occipital neuralgia. This is where the nerves that come out of the spine in the neck, get 'pinched' and cause pain that often wraps around to the face / jaw and even up the scalp. This can cause significant and even debilitating headaches that are difficult to treat. Usually Tylenol or Motrin are not very effective in alleviating these symptoms.

The patients I have had with this issues have benefited from low-doses of muscle relaxants and even neuropathic medications like Gabapentin or Cymbalta to alleviate the symptoms. The pain is not relieved right away but over time the headaches do reduce in intensity and frequency and generally disappear all together. Other options to treat this include chiropractic treatment and physical therapy, both of which also have high success rate.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
