Can Sertraline Be Taken For Pediatric Depression?

My 8 year old grandson was recently put on 25 mg. Sertraline. His parents are recently divorced and my grandson is having difficulties with accepting the situation. He has been doing better in the past year but I question why his psychiatrist would choose a drug not approved for use in pediatric patients by the FDA. should I/his parents be concerned?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Sertraline is widely used in pediatric patients with depression.

A dosage such 25 mg is right.

His parents should not be concerned about it.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
