Can Prednisone Cause Mood Swings And Mental Health Problems?

I m seeking information about prednisone, specifically its mental health effects. My husband has Crohn s Disease and went from 5mg to 20mg after a couple of flares. I ve noticed severe mood swings when he s on a higher dose and right now I have a restraining order against him. I think the increase in prednisone is affecting his mental state. I have no idea where he is or if he s ok and I m very worried about him, but he s assaulted me in the past so I had to involve the police and the court.

hi,
Prednisolone is a steroid which has got effects all over the body tissues and brain is no exemption. Mood swings, psychosis and depression are known side effects of prednisolone. As he is using them since some time, i think it is reasonable to suspect the drug as a cause of his aggressive behaviour. However, it is wise to consult a psychiatrist to rule out other causes and get appropriate treatment as his behavioural change may respond well to therapy.
Hope i am clear.
