Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
my 86 year old mother is taking 40 mg of prednisone a day for a recent polymyalgia rheumatic diagnosis. she has already been diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis and is being treated for that. she has a heart valve replacement too. she has a pulsox she keeps checking and her oxygen level has decreased in the last week. she has to have her oxygen on in the a.m. where before she could keep under control with breathing excercize. Is there a side effect from the prednisone that could be making breathing worse?
Prednisone is a steroid which in simple terms makes breathing easy. Here the cause of the breathlessness is unlikely to be due to prednisone and is more likely to be due to pulmonary fibrosis.
