Can Olanzapine And Alprazolam Be Taken Together For Extreme Psychotic Symptoms?

My mom, 81 years old, has Alzheimer disease with severe psychotic symptoms including hallucinations, anxiety and agitation. The doctor prescribe Olanzapine and Alprazolam for her. Can she take both drugs together? For example, take Alprazolam 0.8 mg/tid and Olanzapine 5 mg/qd?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi & Welcome.
I appreciate your concern for your beloved mother.
The prescribed medications should not be taken together.

If Alprazolam is taken alongwith Olanzapine, it may cause low blood pressure or slow heart beats resulting in dizziness or postural hypotension (a fall in BP when getting up from a sitting or lying position) which can increase a risk of falls and injuries.

To overcome these side effects she may need a dose adjustment of Alprazolam or Alprazolam may be taken at bed time after consulting her doctor.

Hope this answers your query.
