Hi... I have been taking Nexium daily for years. Now it s gone OTC.... my doctor now prescribes Pantoprazole Sod Dr Tabls 40 mg 1 tablet daily. I was reading up that you shouldn t take it for more than like a month..... should i just take the OTC Nexium ? I will be on it long term??
Welcome to HCM! I appreciate your concern towards the safety of Pantoprazole. Age and gender not mentioned. Nexium (Esomeprazole) and Pantoprazole belong to the same group of drugs known as proton pump inhibitors. They have a common mechanism of reducing the acid production in the stomach.
They are used in the treatment of acidity related problems in the stomach and the food pipe. Proton pump inhibitors ( both Nexium and Pantoprazole) especially with larger doses in elderly patients for prolonged treatment may cause thinning of the bones ( osteoporosis) to the extent of increasing the risk for bone fractures such as by taking calcium (such as calcium citrate) and vitamin D3 supplements. The severe form the osteoporosis can be treated by using Bisphosphonates. Other side effects seen with prolonged treatment include increased risk of infections in the stomach and intestines.
Kindly consult your doctor regarding the prevention of these long standing side effects.
Take care of your health. Best regards!
