Can Neo-Mercazole And Propranolol Cause Acne?

Hi there. I just got back my labs and I have a decrease in Neutrophils (32.7, reference range is 40-70) and an increase in Lymphocytes 55.8, reference range is 20-45). I have been taking neomercazole 30mg/day and propranolol 80mg per day for about 6mths. Also, I have stubborn grade 2 acne marks that doesn t respond to treatment, could this be the cause of my acne?? Also I just started taking doxycycline for my acne, and epiduo... Is there anything else I can do?? It s very bad

Hi,

The most common side effects of propranolol are low blood pressure, decreased heartbeats, fatigue, cold clammy skin, insomnia, and mood changes.

The most common side effects of Neo-Mercazole are skin rashes, gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea and vomiting, and altered taste, liver dysfunction and agranulocytosis (decreased neutrophil count).

These medicines are unlikely to cause acne however a decreased neutrophil count can predispose to a number of infections. So, I advise you to stop taking Neo-Mercazole and ask your doctor for an alternate effective but a safer anti-thyroid medicine.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali, General & Family Physician
