Can Minivelle And Macrobid Be Taken Together?

HI I am 19 years old and am on Camrese birth control pill. I don t get a period for 3 months. Ive been on it for a year and have had several uti s,7 in one year, but not sure if it is related. The last one I had, my doctor prescribed an antibiotic called Macrobid. After I completed the antibiotic I started my period and has continued for 19 days. Today my gyn has prescribed Minivelle, a estradiol transdermal patch, thinking this should stop my bleeding. My mom says she should not be prescribing more estrogen and she says that there is a contraindication to these two things taken at the same time. Do you have an opinion? Thanks!! Marina

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

The inhibitor of cytochrome P 3A 4 such as Macrobid, creates problems by increased plasma concentration and superseded effects of Minivelle with estrogen content.

So your mom is correct to guide you that Minivelle and Macrobid must not be taken together.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Purva Patel,
