Can Metformin Tablets For Elevated Lood Sugar Affect SGPT Level?

Hi Dr. Andrew, I have high level of SGPT (150 units/ Asian tests) I also have a high level of blood sugar about 7.6 units (HbNIC test) I was prescribed Metformin ( half a tb twice a day) and Fenobrite (one tb a day every other day). I am concerned with metformin as it said would increase levels of SGPT. Is that correct doctor?

Hi

Metformin can cause minor liver enzymes in some patients. But the drug may not cause the sgpt level rise by three times the normal value. Fenofibrate is a lipid lowering drug used in reducing blood cholesterol levels. This drug can cause sgpt level elevation and liver damage in many patients.Routine monitoring of liver function tests should be done to assess the liver function. In case of persistent rise in sgpt, other lipid lowering drugs should be used.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
