I use Ibuprofen regular for my arthritic pain. taking as many as 800 mgs. to ease the pain associated with playing advanced level tennis. I m 66 years old 25lbs over weight and drink like a fish,(several times a week). one of my buddies recommend Meloxicam. should i look into it as a replacement to IB?

Hello, Thanks for the query.
Whether one takes Ibuprofen or Meloxicam both are NSAIDs, have similar set of effects and also side effects. High doses of both are harmful if taken for long time. They affect kidneys causing nephropathy. But if one wants to take these drugs for short term pain and inflammation relief both are equally good. One can replace Ibu with meloxicam.
However, continuous long term use is definitely harmful. Alcohol intake has no direct impact on the drugs effects. But chronic alcoholism will have damaged gastrointestinal mucous membrane which can be further damaged by regular dosing of NSAIDs, leading to hypperacidity or acid peptic disease. Thanks
