Can Lisinopril Be Taken Instead Of Diltiazem?

I have been taking diltiazem 120mg cap every evening at 9:30 as prescribed on Sept 2, 2017. I had mouth sores on my tongue and a very painful hip..Orthopedic Dr said bursitis. Mouth sores from latent chicken pox virus. Second bout of sores in 2 weeks. I had had an infection in my eyes in August 4, 2017. One of the drugs for that was erythromycin. For blood pressure I had been taking topril xl 50 mg and liscinopril 10 mg. The last few days and especially today, I have been feeling faint, and short of breath. Can i skip the Dilitiazem tonight and take the liscinopril instead??

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and understand your concern.

Diltiazem and Lisinopril are both used to treat hypertension but different from Lisinopril, Diltiazem also affects the heart rhythm and is used to treat arrhythmias (when the heart rhythm is irregular). If your doctor has prescribed Diltiazem to have control of the heart rhythm than it might not be a good idea to take lisinopril instead of diltiazem.

On the other hand feeling faint and short of breath are very important symtoms that indicate that you need to see a doctor to make sure that your heart and lungs are well so please see your doctor as soon as possible and discuss with him the needed adjustments in treatment.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Kind regards,
Antoneta Zotaj, MD
