Can Lipitor Be Discontinued For Voice Hoarseness?

I have serious hoarseness and I think it may be caused by my Lipitor. I am also on metformin. I was told the Lipitor will protect my kidneys from the metformin. Could I safely stop the Lipitor for a few weeks to see if it is what is causing the severe hoarseness?

Lipitor is used for several indications including high cholesterol, stroke, or heart attack. If you are on it for stroke or heart attack, you should really think carefully before you stop it as it is a medication that can significantly reduce your risk of another stroke or heart attack. If you are on it only for high cholesterol, then stopping it would not be as dangerous, although your cholesterol level will likely rise again. It is very uncommon to experience hoarseness from Lipitor, but you can stop it for a few days and assess your symptoms.
If the hoarseness is severe you really should be seeking medical evaluation as there are more serious causes of hoarseness that you should be evaluated for and should not wait several weeks. Lipitor does not protect your kidneys from the effect of metformin and stopping it would not be detrimental to your kidneys.
