Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
yes I am taking Irbesartan 75 mg. in Am still high blood pressure. Found out today my kidneys are not filtering at the right level and doctor wants to add to this Amlodipine 5 mg. I have had Hypertension for about 15 years. Now this has occurred. Scared these two drugs will make me faint or have too low blood pressure. They want me to see a Nephrologist to get this down. What do you feel about me taking both in Am? YYYY@YYYY
Hello, Thanks for the query. When hypertension is not fully controlled, or if BP is not maintained around 130/80 mm Hg, it tends to affect kidney function. There may be reduction in GFR (Glomerular Filtration Rate) and also increase in excretion of microalbumin initially and later albumin itself. This can happen to almost all the patients of high BP. Hence to control BP within the expected range additional drugs are needed. Adding Amlodepine should not be causing any difficulty. However, in a few patients it has a tendancy to lead to pedal edema (swelling of lower limbs). Otherwise it is a good drug for treating high BP. Therefore, you need not worry so much. In many cases more than two drugs are needed to control BP. Thanks.
