Can Ibuprofen Be Taken Along With Hydrocodone?

I had rotator cuff surgery and was prescribed hydrocodone/acetaminophen 5-325. At this point in time (11 weeks after) I only take it if the pain is really bad, usually after therapy. Can I take ibuprofen while taking this prescription and how many mg would be safe?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
As you are already taking hydrocodone and acetaminophen, there is no need to take ibuprofen which is also pain killer. Acetaminophen and ibuprofen have same mechanism of action in relieving pain while hydrocodone hhas different mechanism of action. In terms of drug combinations, it is found that the combination between analgesics with the same action mechanism (such as acetaminophen & ibuprofen) can increase the occurrence of adverse drug reaction such as abdominal pain and the risk of bleeding. So please do not take ibuprofen along with hydrocodone & acetaminophen. If you can use ibuprofen 600 mg thrice daily alone for pain relief, but do not mix it with hydrocodone and acetaminophen combination.
Thanks
