Achalasia cardia is a functional disorder of the esophagus in which the lower esophageal sphincter not properly relax in coordination with the peristalsis which leads to difficulty in swallowing. This condition is confirmed by manometry, barium swallow and endoscopy. Management of the condition is non surgical and surgical. Non surgical measures include pneumatic dilatation, botox injection and medication.
Heller's Myotomy is the surgical procedure in which the muscle layer is operated to release the sphincter in the lower esophagus. This has a complication such as GERD. Fundoplication is the additional procedure to prevent this condition. Domperidone is an antiemetic acts by inhibiting the D2 and D3 receptors and also chemoreceptor trigger zone at the floor of the fourth ventricle. Ondansetron is an antiemetic which can be used as an alternative for domperidone. Visit the Gastroenterologist for further evaluation and management.
