Can I prevent Insulin injections ?

Hi Doctor, I am Jayaprasad, 42 year old male, and Diabetic since 6 years. I am 5'5" and weigh 98 kgs. I am on Glimepiride and Pioglitazone tablets. What I am afraid basically is if I become dependent on insulin in my future life. That thought itself horrifies me, and I get upset. Is it a possibility in my case? I am on a very good diet and exercise and maintain my blood sugars within 186 PPBS and 134 FBS. Can you assess the possiblity? Thanks in advance.

Dear Jayaprasad,

Thanks for using Healthcaremagic.

First of all I congratulate you as you have been maintaining a very healthy blood glucose levels. So you should be happy with it. I recommend you to continue your good dietary and exercise habits. I understand that you have been affected by Diabetes at an early age, but since you are on the right lifestyle and treatment, you are going good.

Regarding the usage of insulin, that shall be required if your blood glucose levels are not being controlled with oral medicines alone. That is not a possibility in all Diabetics. If your pancreas can produce sufficient insulin, then you shall not be put on insulin injections. And you are worried about the injections, let me frank that insulin injections are not painful and patients have good compliance with it. Hence not a major hindrance. Research is going on to develop nasal ( using it via nose as inhaler) and also sublingual(keeping below the tongue) to ease the process of taking insulin. Hope for the best.

I wish you the very best of health. Be on regular follow ups with your treating doctor.
