Can Evista Be Taken While Having Family History Of Heart Attacks?

I m 69 yrs old. Female. Took Fosamax for 8 years til dr. took me off of it 3 years ago with a lets keep an eye on it approach. I take meds for cholesterol. As a result of current dexa scan, dr. wants me to take Evista. We discussed my history, but not my family history. My Dad died at age 56 of a heart attack (he was overweight, drank and smoked). I want not overweight, drink once in a great while and quit smoking almost 20 years ago. Can I take Evista given my Dad s history? Comments about this drug on this site are scary.

I read your question carefully and I understand your concern.

Drugs like Evista are indeed associated with a higher risk of stroke or other cardiovascular occlusion events. For that reason their use is questionable in an elderly lady, having also high cholesterol and family history of such events.
I am not saying it is contraindicated since you don't mention any other risk factors (high blood pressure, diabetes), so if other options for osteoporosis are not possible it could still be taken as osteoporosis carries its own risk of complications, it's a question at times of weighing the risks and choosing the minor evil. If however other options like Fosamax which you mentioned to have taken with no side effects are possible I think you should discuss their use with your doctor.

I hope to have been of help.
