General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

I am sorry for the death in family the patient has gone through.

To answer your questions:
- Effexor (venlafaxine) is an anti-depressant of SSNRIs drug group (selective serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor). It is used to treat depression, panic disorder and anxiety.

- Xanax (Alprazolam) is a benzodiazepine which works by enhancing the effects of GABA in the body.
It is also used to treat panic disorders and anxiety.

They can be taking both, but with the risk of dizziness, lack of concentration, confusion and drowsiness. So, ask her not to drive when taking both and not to drink alcoholic drinks.

Hope this helps.
