Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Had a normal ekg and physical and blood 3 months ago. Now I had an ekg for a preop certification and it showed septal infarct age undetermined. Had echo yesterday and waiting for results but tech privately told my doctor it was normal. Can an ekg be wrong
Thank you for your query The accuracy of the EKG depends on proper placement of the leads (on the chest), the surface on which the leads are attached (chest wall) and proper technique.
If everything is done right, then the EKG is the most reliable study of the electrical activity and conduction system of the heart. If done wrong, it could lead to conflicting conclusions. An infarction is death of a tissue due to loss of blood supply. This then shows up as a hypokinetic area (echo) or an area of abnormal conduction (ekg).
Results of the investigations should be correlated with symptoms, your medical history and clinical findings to arrive at a diagnosis. Hope this helps. Feel free to get back to us if you have further questions. Wish you good health
