Can Diphenhydramine HCL Be Taken While On Doxepin?

Yes, my Mom takes 2 doxepins at bedtime and her sleeping pills (triazalome) are causing her to sleep walk at night. She is 90 yrs old and this is taking a big toll on her causing her to fall and talk out of her head all night. Trying to see if I give her 1 diphenhydramine HCI 50 mg is ok!

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

It is best to discuss the sleeping issues with your doctor. Diphenhydramine when taken with doxepine increases the sedation and also increases the effect of doxepine so it needs good monitoring and care in use.
I would not recommend you to give her diphenhydramine with doxepine as this increases the risks for side effects, especially if the doctor has not advised this.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
