General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

It is fine to use water and soap to wash wounds and it should not cause any problems unless you are allergic to some of the ingredients of the soap. If you notice any itchiness or redness or local irritation with the use of the soap it is best to avoid it.
As for the petroleum jelly, if the wound is dry it might help to put small amounts, on the other hand is not good to overdue.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
