Can Copper T Be Used For Emergency Contraception?

I would like to know some details of copper T insertion - 1) Is the procedure painful? How long does it take? I am on day 4 of my cycle and am planning to do it tomorrow. 2) Will it cause infections? 3) Can I go to work immediately after the procedure? 4) Will it affect my sex life? 5) Will it cause hormonal imbalance? 6) Will I gain weight because of this? I have PCOS which I have controlled only through exercise and dieting 7) Will it impact my breast milk supply? My baby is 8 months old. 8) Will removing the Copper T be painful? 9) How long will this procedure prevent pregnancies? Thanks XXXXXXX

Hi,

Intrauterine device (IUD) with copper (also known as Copper T) is a type of intrauterine device used for birth control. The procedure for its insertion is simple and is painless.

It hardly takes about 10 to 15 minutes for its insertion. It can be inserted at any phase of the menstrual cycle, but the optimal time is right after the menstrual period.

Routine work can be assumed following its insertion. After the insertion is finished, normal activities can be performed as soon as it feels comfortable. It does not affect sex life.

It does not cause any hormonal imbalance and also does not cause any weight related changes.

The device is placed in the uterus and can be left alone for up to twelve years. It may be used by women of all ages regardless of whether or not they have had children.

Breastfeeding is not a contraindication for the use of the copper IUD. Following removal, fertility returns quickly. Removal of Copper IUD is also a simple procedure and takes about 5 to 10 minutes.

Certain side effects may be experienced, which include: anemia, backache, breakthrough bleeding, or bleeding between periods, cramping, vaginal inflammation, pain during intercourse, severe menstrual pain and heavy periods.

However, most women don't experience any of the above-mentioned side effects and its insertion is well tolerated.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
