Can Clonidine Cause Irrational Fear And Hallucinations?

My son was started on Clonidine.02 mg bid . He has become very fearful, says he hears noises, and is afraid something like a snake or animal is going to get him. Is this a side effect? Do I have to wean him off slowly or just stop it? He is 10 years old and has been on it for 3 weeks. He was prescribed it for facial ticks along with the Focalin 40mg. QD for his ADHD

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Treatment given for ADHD and skin ticks usually doesn't cause hallucinations. But hallucinations occurs due to ADHD. You should continue the treatment and wait for the outcome. At least two to three months will take to recover from ADHD.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Nirav Nimavat, General & Family Physician
