Can Ciprodex Be Used For A Perforated Eardrum?

My son was prescribed Ciprodex today after being diagnosed with a perforated ear drum. I m almost certain my doctor said don t use the ciprodex you have at home since his eardrum is now ruptured, I ll prescribe you a different drop and after the appointment I go to the pharmacy and pick up Ciprodex. Was this a mistake or should I use the ciprodex prescribed?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Ciprodex is a combination of ciprofloxacin (antibiotic) and a steroid (dexamethasone). This is not dangerous to use in the ear in the case of a ruptured eardrum so, it is completely safe for your son to use it.

It would be a problem if any antibiotic in the class of aminoglycosides is included in the mixture (amikacin, gentamycin, etc.), as they do hurt the inner area.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Antoneta Zotaj, General & Family Physician
