Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I was diagnosed with gout in my right knee. I was told there is nothing that can be done to ease the pain. I am waiting for a pain specialist to give me some kind of shot. I am on a years waiting list. Is the some relief to aid me and should I seek a second opinion? When I have spoken to people who have gout, I noticed they have medication to ease their discomfort now the tips of my toes are numb, not sure if this is related. Can blood pressure medication cause problems?
Sorry for the inconvenience you have been through.
1. First of all, there are a number of medications that may work very well for the pain of t gout and most people do not need shots but rather are good with the drugs. So you may talk to your doctor or have a second opinion who may advise you drugs for the pain.
2. Yes, certain blood pressure medication may cause high uric acid especially the water pills, like hydrochlorothiazide or other water pills. Beta blockers, like atenolol, may also raise uric acid level. We prefer losartan in such patients for blood pressure which would not only control BP but also lower uric acid
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Mahboob Ur Rahman, General & Family Physician
