Can Amoxicillin Be Safely Discontinued After Two Doses Due To Side Effects?

Is it safe to discontinue taking amoxicillin after two doses? It was prescribed for my husband but all he has is a common cold, and we have an inhaler and Mucinex to treat the congestion. The antibiotic is giving him diarrhea, even though he has taken a probiotic along with the antibiotic. The prescribing physician is now closed for the holiday and will not be available until Tuesday.

Hi..
Thanks for the query..

As per your complain if your husband is having cold then it is a viral infection and antibiotics will not help as they can cure only bacterial infection..
So if it is purely diagnosed as cold then he can stop antibiotic intake..

If he still has diarrhea that is a common side effect of antibiotic due to disturbance in the bacterial flora of intestine, then he can take loperamide and as he will stop taking antibiotics the diarhea will gradually resolve..

As far as for cold he can take supportive treatment to relieve the symptoms like:

-Gargle with a warm saline solution that is by mixing 1 teaspoon salt in a glass of water and warm it to make a luke warm solution..

-Take a combination of decongestant like Phenylephrine, mucolytic like Ambroxol and anti allergic levocetrizine and another combination of Acetaminophen and Ibuprofen..

-Take cough expectorant containing Gueifenesin and cough suppressant containing Dextromethorphan.

-Chew a Vitamin C pellet daily..

-Do steam inhalations..

-Avoid spicy and chilled foods..

-Sip on warm water throughout the day..

-Do warm compresses over chest..

Hopefully the symptoms will resolve within a week and if it worsen consult a General Physician and get evaluated..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.
