Can Amoxicillin And Cephalexin Be Taken Together?

I am taking cephalexin (4/day) because of a skin cancer (basal cell) surgery on my knee. I have a periodontist appointment tomorrow morning that I am required by orthopedic surgeon who replaced my knee to take 4 amoxicillin one hour before the appointment. Any possible interactions by taking both?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,
Thank you for your query.

Amoxycillin and cephalexin have similar antibacterial action.
Your doctor probably prescribed this for additional coverage during a dental procedure.
It is OK to take them both as prescribed especially as the amoxycillin is taken as a one time dose to cover the procedure.

Possible side effects include loose stools, bloating. These are reduced if taken after a meal and you take probiotics 4 hrs apart from the antibiotic dose.

Hope this answers your query.
Wish you good health. I'd be happy to help if you any further queries.
