Can Acetyl-L-Carnitine Be Taken While On Prescription Medication?

Mother with frontal lobe dementia diagnosis. Age 84. Word recall is her main issue presently. She has been told about a prescription drug for Alzheimer’s that the Doctor could give her. There are gastrointestinal side effects with it. She already has some issues with that, so I would not want her on that drug. Is Acetyl L carnitine useful? Helpful?

Hello,

Acetyl-L-Carnitine is an amino acid supplement claimed to be useful for certain neurological disorders such as Alzheimer's disease, age-related memory loss, late-life depression, and thinking problems related to Huntington's disease. However, its efficacy is not proved by any clinical trials hence not recommended by FDA for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease.

It is known to cause side effects such stomach upset, nausea, vomiting, dry mouth, headache, and restlessness. It can also cause a "fishy" odor of the urine, breath, and sweat.

For the effective treatment of Alzheimer's disease drugs like Donepezil, Galantamine or Memantine would be effective.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali
