Breast Cancer, Hot Flashes, Night Sweats. On Low Dose HRT. Had Abdominal Hysterectomy, Ovaries Removed. Continue EstroGel?

I had an abdominal hysterectomy and ovaries removed 7+ years ago. I was on a very low-dose HRT pill for a few months. I got concerned about breast cancer, as my grandmother had it, so I stopped the pill. In the last 2 to 3 years I have gotten progressively worse with insomnia, severe night sweats, hot flashes, loss of hair, thinning of skin, mood swings, weight gain, brain fog, and just feeling awful. I started natural progesterone cream which did stop the severe night sweats and controlled the,hot flashes but no help for the other symptoms. I went to a new GYN today and he says at age 65 I should NOT be having hot flashes and basically said my symptoms were not caused by the hysterectomy. He refused to order hormone testing and would not prescribe a low-dose pill. He prescribed EstroGel. I am willing to try just about anything at this point, but I am a little skeptical of this plan because this doctor seemed to scoff at my suggestions and symptoms. Does EstroGel address all or most of the above symptoms or should I seek
another opinion?

Thank you,
Sherry

hi,
Welcome to HCM
It is true that at the age of 65 years, Hormone replacement therapy is not routinely indicated. Hormone tests for FSH, LH, Estrogen and progesterone will not help much except that you must be advised to do Thyroid Function tests. Above symptoms could be due to Hypothyroidism. EstroGel will help only for local vaginal symptoms of recurrent vaginal Discharge or Urinary Symptoms due to Atrophy of Vaginal and urethral Mucosa due to lack of Estrogen Hormones. You may also be prescribed Omega 3, Omega 6, and Omega 9 , Vit D tab and Anti depressant. You should also take good healthy diet and regular physical and mental exercises.
Hope I have answered your question.
