Breaking Out Into Hives And Welts After Fever With Nausea And Back Pain. Should I Be Concerned About Meningitis?

My wife has a fever that comes and goes, slight nausea that seems to come and go and constant neck and back pain, this developed three nights ago and gotten worse. Yesterday she started breaking out in hives or welts on her arms that are getting bigger in size and numbers. We went to the ER and she had a chest x-ray, a blood sample and a urine sample. All came back okay, but this was yesterday and last night and today she is a little worse. The bigger hives or welts I noticed just tonight. I am concerned about meningitis, but that wasn't a concern at the ER when I asked. Is it possible it was missed based on the tests that were performed? If so, should I take her back to another ER?

Hello friend,

The hives and welts you have described may be urticaria where red raised eruptions appear and they usually disappear within 3 days.

But if they are persistent and are not fading with time, we need to consider differentials of fever with rash

1. viral exanthem
2. drug rash
3. thrombocytopenia associated rash (low platelet count)
4. meningitis

since your wife is getting constant neck and back pain , yes meningitis is a possibility which needs to be evaluated by CSF (cerebrospinal fluid) examination.

I would like to see the reports of the blood tests done already , however you said all came ok , so it goes more in favor of viral fever associated rash.

a proper examination is required , so i will suggest you to follow up with your doctor .

Wish her a good health and speedy recovery.
