HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Steroids are normally very effective for terminating the cluster headache cycle and he has already had 2 rounds with no relief.

Medications for these headaches can be divided into abortive or prophylactic.

Abortive medications are used to stop or reduce the intensity of a present acute attack.
Prophylactic medications are used to prevent an episode from occuring.

In term of abortive agents to help him now, the most effective medications are the triptans such as sumatriptan, zolmitriptan, eletriptan, naratriptan.
These medications would likely require a prescription but he can inquire at his local pharmacy.

Intranasal capsaicin has also been shown to be effective.

In terms of preventing future episodes , medications such as verapamil have been shown to be most effective. He can consider asking his doctor for this to prevent other episodes.

I hope this helps
