Are Spectacles Mandatory For A Child With Cylindrical Power?

Hello Doctor, We were told that my son (6yrs) having cylindrical power. Doctor gave compu eyedrops and multu vitamin eyedrops and asked us to come for check after 3days, She also asked us to take the Iris scan as there is a shape difference in eyeball. My queries are, 1. why 6yrs kid is having this cylindrical power problem? is it due to watching tv for more time? 2. Do we really need to take the scan? 3) will this problem leads to severe headache? 4)what are the ways we can cure this problem? 5) wearing glass is mandatory for this problem? Thanks.

Thanks for raising your concern on this platform and following is/are recommended guidelines:

1. Cylindrical power are usually genetically determined which means that there may be some family member from either side of the family. (watching TV is just an aggravating factor)

2. This is not curable, glass fixes the vision and the visual development but not the problem, i.e. when he will remove the glasses he will see poorly, there are coeneal surgeries to reduce or eliminate the symptoms but a person must be above 18 years of age.

3. If he does not wear glasses, his retinal and visual development may not occur resulting in refractive ambylopia (i.e. if the critical period of visual development is gone without glasses then he never will see clearly no matter how strong are the glasses later)

4. Do get glasses for him and wear them all the time and get a second opinion from an Opthalmologist
