Are Sore Throat And Runny Nose After Exposure To Mouse Droppings Symptoms Of A Hantavirus Infection?

I swept up some mouse droppings without taking any precautions 2 weeks ago. I haven t felt well since. I now have flu symptoms (general aches, sore throat, runny nose) but no fever and none of the large muscle body aches. Is it possible that I have hantavirus?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

The infection with hantavirus is occurred when people inhale air contaminated with the virus (airborne transmission). Symptoms include general (fever, fatigue, large muscles ache); gastrointestinal (nausea, vomiting, etc). You are only reporting general aches (no large muscle aches); sore throat and runny nose; altogether symptoms of a common cold/influenza with no fever. So, do not think of hantavirus this time but to a possible influenza virus.Get more rest. Drink plenty of fluids. Gargle with warm water and salt.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
