Are Scratchy, Red And Sore Throat And Long And Swollen Uvula Symptoms Of Strep Throat?

My throat has been sore for several weeks. The Dr. gave me antibiotics, but it didn’t work. Then he prescribed prednisone. My throat is scratchy, red and sore. My uvula is long and swollen. I feel like the infection is still there. Could it be strep?

Hi,

A sore throat can be due to various reasons:
- viral infections,
- bacterial infections such as streptococcal infection (a less common type of infection which needs antibiotics for treatment and to prevent complications),
- allergy,
- dryness,
- irritants,
- muscle strain,
- GERD, etc.

The risk factors could be age, smoking, allergies, weakened immunity, chronic or frequent sinus infections.

You can prevent it by following a proper good hygiene, and a few preventive measures such as avoiding irritants treating allergies, and plenty of fluids. Warm water gargles will also help.

If it still persists, visiting a nearby general physician will guide you through.

Dentist Dr. Honey Arora's  Response
Hi,

Scratchy, red and sore throat with inflamed or swollen uvula can be due to infection in the throat or strep throat caused by bacterial infection, however, at times severe acid reflux can also cause inflammation in the throat.

Allergies and postnasal drip can also cause the same.

So my suggestion is to consult an Otorhinolaryngologist and get evaluated and a clinical examination and investigations like throat swab culture can be done to rule out allergies.

In case if acid reflux is suspected then upper G.I. endoscopy can be done.

For now, do warm saline gargles. Suck Cepacol lozenges to reduce pain. Avoid spicy, irritant and acidic foods. Drink plenty of water. Take anti-inflammatory painkiller like Ibuprofen.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
