Are Itchy Rashes On The Right Arm And Belly Side Effects Of Taking Doxycycline For Treating A Tick Bite?

I had a tick bite. The doctor prescribed doxycycline twice a day 100 mg. each. I started taking this antibiotic last Monday and today, I have very itchy rask with bumps on my right arm and around my belly and crotch areas. I am taking Pradaxa on a regular basis. Should I continue doxycycline or should I discontinue taking it??

Hello,

obviously the only possible answer is that the treating doctor should decide about continuation or discontinuation of treatment. There are some things to discuss with your doctor though...

Tick bites - in general - do not require treatment unless symptoms have developed (fever, rash, etc). You can only take a single 200mg prophylactic dose of doxycycline for Lyme disease if the tick remained attached for 3 days or more and you were bitten in an endemic area.

Itchy bumps are usually caused by allergic reactions. Since doxycycline is the 'new' drug here, this is the drug that probably caused the rash. Pradaxa is - probably - irrelevant. When an allergic reaction occurs the doctor has to weigh the risk of a serious reaction and the risk of discontinuing the treatment. Clinical assessment is very important when taking such decisions, so this is something that only your doctor should do.

I hope I've answered your question. Please let me know if you need further assistance.

Kind Regards,
Dr Panagiotis Zografakis
