Are Injections For Increasing Bone Density Advisable While Having Receding Gums?

Hi Dr. Rynne. I am 72 years old and have been taking Fosamax for over 20 years. My bone density is continuing to decline and is now showing a T score of Lumber spine L1-L4 0.833/cm*2 T -2.8 Z score -1.0 Femoral neck o.755/cm*2 |T -2.1 Z -o.1 Total proximal femur 0.760/cm*-2.2 My GP is now considering giving me injections six monthly . I am concerned and would appreciate if there are risks involved in having these injection as I have receding gums. I read about possible problems which can cause rotten jaw bone problems. Your advice would be appreciated. Regards Connie

Hi,

1. As already there is a decline in bone density [as suggested by the values] which means that going by your age [72 years] and low T score: there is the pathogenesis of Osteoporosis going inside your bones, and long term use of Fosamax [alendronate] is associated with an atypical femur fracture, osteonecrosis of the jaw bone and even if it is stopped then also the risk of impending falls/fracture continue to persist.

2. It is suggested that if Fosamax is taken along with calcium and vitamin D the combination is safe and efficacious.

3. You might consider consulting for an Alternative approach in Ayurveda where there are herbs that acts as natural SERMs [selective estrogen receptor modulator] without affecting the bone density anywhere else inside the body. [examples include asparagus racemosus, soy, flax seeds].

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
