Are Inflammation And Pain The Symptoms Of Eustachian Tube Dysfunction?

Does this sound like Eustachian Tube Dysfunction and is it in some cases a chronic, untreatable problem? For over a month, I ve been having problems with my left ear. It started when I had grommets and I often performed the valsalva maneuver. The grommets have fallen out but now I have an inflamed feeling where the Eustachian tube area is. I can t lay on it otherwise it would be blocked, inflamed, hurting all day and hearing would be worsened. I also hear a whooshing sound whenever I chew or open my jaw. Every day I m experiencing slight pain and an inflamed feeling. If this is Eustachian Tube dysfunction, how can it be treated and can doctors actually see the problem? I ve heard stories that some people have lived with it for years and doctors are not able to treat it.

hello dear, this can be related to your eustachian tube dysfunction but first we need to find out underlying cause that lies in your nose & sinuses. we can get a nasal endoscopy done & if needed even ET tube can be visualized, if found inflamed we can give antibiotics with steroids & nasal decongestants. or we can get a CT scan PNS to rule out sinus pathology. we also need to evaluate your hearing by pure tone audiometry and impedance audiometry.

ENT Specialist Dr. Maneesh Kumar Jain's  Response
Hai,

First of all clear your concept about Eustachian tube (ET). ET is a tube which opens in middle ear, the part of ear which is behind ear drum which we can not see from outside, and other end opens in throat behind the nose. It is a deep structure in the neck and you can not block or press it from outside by any means. So your putting pressure over ET by sleeping on the side is not possible.
Now, it is true that ET dysfunction is a chronic problem and takes a long time to recover but it is treatable and more importantly it depend on the cause of dysfunction. ..Most of the causes are treatable.
