Are Heart Problems Hereditary?

What are the chances I ll need heart bypass if I have a significant family history of it My brother died at 24 ( car crash) but we were told had 80% and 90% blocked carotided arteries my other brother just had tripple bypass at 28 and my mom had quadruple at 52 my self and my siblings are all thin and active

Hi,

The exact risk is not known but unfortunately it would be significant with your family history.

You can decrease the risk with controlling as many risk factors as you can. Even though you are thin, you would need to exercise (if you are cleared to do so- if no existing heart disease), at least 150 mins a week of exercise is recommended (both aerobic and strength training).

Eating a healthy diet is also important. In addition: you should check your cholesterol, blood pressure and blood sugar levels. These should also be tightly controlled to decrease your risk.
